Goodbye West Orange

Posted Friday, May 29, 2009 by Scott Garland

Since I always get nervous and never say everything I want to say at a banquet I figured this would be the best way to get what I want out. I first off want to talk about my 2009 Junior Varsity team. These guys walked in not knowing a whole lot of the technical part of baseball. They knew how to throw and catch and hit a little bit. They didn't know exactly how to prevent certain situations from happening or how to be in the right place to make a play. They were not very good at fundamentals. This could go on and on. I am not going to sit here and say I taught them all of that and was the only reason these kids did so well this season. This group of kids hung on every word I said and bought into what we as a coaching staff taught. They worked on there own and even harder during practice. This group was a coaches dream come true.

I want each and every player to know that I truly appreciate all the hardwork they put into the season. Also know that there is much more work to do. Do not ever be satisfied with what your doing or you have already been beat. Push your self to the limit and then a little more. You guys are the future of West Orange baseball and the future is very bright!

To the parents- My first year as head coach was a complete mess! This season was a complete opposite. I have all of you to thank for that. Yes more talent on the field usually means more w's in the win coloumn. Good parents also are a big part of that. You guys always seemed willing to help out in anyway and that goes along way. You were also very supportive of the coaching staff and that helps us to be able to do our job better. The negative attitudes were gone and it showed. Always remember when you are negative towards the program whether it be to a coach or players or whatever your kids hear everything! That attitude then comes out of your children which leads to a disaster. Thank you for always being there for me and willing to help out. Craig Davis thanks for everything you did from car washes to advice to just being a friend. Gary Latouche we couldn't have had such a great season without your email updates or public address announcing at the JV home games. John and Beth Sullivan thank you once again for opening your home to the entire team for lunch. Mr. White thanks for allowing us to use your store to have car washes and pre sale on tickets. I know I might be forgetting others and I apologize! I want to thank everyone for there time and effort in the concession stand. This program is what it is because of all of you!

To my friends and fellow coaches. Casey, Mike, Mark and Tony you guys are great people and even better at teaching the game of baseball. I will always respect and appreciate what you brought to the table. Tony thank you for all your time and effort specifically with the JV team in the fall. I just wish I could have had you all spring. Enjoy the cold weather! Mark we simply could not hit without you! Thank you for your advice and friendship. Your passion for the game is very contagious please don't ever lose it. Mike you will always be the honorary ball boy in my eyes! No seriously you are a great kid and friend. Your heart is in the right place best of luck to you! Casey I just met you this year but you are great. You helped with so much this season. I hope I can do what you do for Jesse over at Apopka this coming season. You make everyone's job easier! Your knowledge of the game is wonderful and came at the right time. You are still learning everyday which is needed and I learned that from you this season. You always got something out of every day on the baseball field. I thank you for your friendship and knowledge you gave this season. I will always admire and respect what you are doing for this program.

Jesse I will get to you in a minute...

To the West Orange administration. Principal Larsen you are a great guy and an even better principal. You are a breath of fresh air to the staff and students. Please don't ever lose your enthusiasm and love for inspiring your staff and students. It truly was a pleasure working under you. Coach Boston I appreciate you allowing me the chance to coach at West Orange. Adam Miller I sure hope you get the job as AD when Coach Boston retires! You will do an outstanding job. Thank you for all the things you taught me as coach and administrator while I was at West Orange. Andrew Jackson you are a clown! But I still love you man. Thanks for being my goodluck charm at the home games! Toby Hurst you are not an adminstrator but I figured I'd add you in here. Thank you for your love for the program as well as West Orange. Every time I saw you it reminded me why I was at West Orange. Us Warriors will always be Warriors.

Jesse what can I say. You hired me as a pitching coach and then made me a head coach all in the same season. I don't know if it was luck or because you believed in me. Either way I could never thank you enough. I was living a dream. I appreciate you taking West Orange from the ground to the USA today! I appreciate your desire to always make the PROGRAM better. Don't ever let some kids parents get in the way of that. You know what is right for the program. Please continue to keep West Orange at the top and strive for more. Please continue to run a "big time" program. You have taught me how to coach, how to deal with parents and how to be a better person. I will always hold my time at West Orange close to my heart. What I learned in your program will be something I push on every coach or program I am involved with from this day forward. You are a role model for these kids but you are also one for all the young coaches out there. I wish you and Kelli all the best in your marriage this summer. I also wish you nothing but the best in your future at West Orange and beyond.

Thank you West Orange!
